Itchy Feet continues to make good progress, even though they are travelling at 90 degrees to the course to Fiji.
Itchy Feet called Race Director Sally Garrett at 21:45 last evening (Tuesday 7th June). At the time they were making good progress in 35 knots gusting 50 knots under storm jib. All is well, and the crew are comfortable. They were in heavy rain and 5-7m swells. The local weather forecast for the boat overnight was robust to say the least.
At Norfolk Island, 200 nm to the west of Itchy Feet, the front has passed and the weather station was showing 5 knot northerlies at 2100 last night.
The front is occluded, so there is a broad band of rain. All models forecast a peak in wind speed of 40 knots – gusting 60 knots between 12 midnight and 1 am . From 4 am Wednesday morning a drop in wind speed was anticipated, and by 8 am today they should have been in 15 knot northerlies.
So our models show that they should be out of the worst of it now.
Communications to the boat are good. Friends, family and the race committee are all eagerly waiting for them to head toward Fiji.
